Obituary

Franciszek Lis, known by many as Franek, passed away at the age of 91 on January 22, 2024. Beloved husband of Anna Lis (nee Plachno); loving father of Barbara (Peter) Biernat, Renata Lis (Krzysztof Szmurlo); endearing grandfather of Christopher (Jessica Gal) and Robert Szmurlo; Stephanie, John, and Paul Biernat. Loving uncle and friend of many in the United States as well as in his home country of Poland.

Franek was born in the village of Rajsko within the Brzesko County of Poland. He was the son of the late Stefania (née Pecak) and Jozef Lis. He was the younger brother of the late Stanislaw, Wladyslaw, Genowefa Lis and the older brother of the late Jan Lis. During the 1950's, Franek completed military service with the Polish army. In his late twenties he started working in the steelworks in Nowa Huta. It was there that he met his wife, Anna, and started a family. In 1975, Franek immigrated with his family to Chicago. He lived in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood for several years before becoming a long-time resident of Jefferson Park. For over two decades, he was a loyal worker of the Inx International Ink Company (formerly Acme Printing) having retired in 1997. After retirement, Franek assisted in raising his five grandchildren. He was frequently seen walking them to and from St. Constance School. Franek was a long-time member of Polish National Alliance's Lodge 1532, parishioner of St. Constance Church, and member of Klub Pojawian w Chicago. Franek enjoyed riding his bike, wearing trucker hats, watching Chicago Bulls basketball games on TV, growing vegetables in his garden, watching his favorite game shows (Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Family Fued), making homemade pickles, attending picnics in Cook County's forest preserves, and retelling stories from his long life. He will be dearly missed by many.
